The purpose of the Altar Guild is to assist the clergy. The Guild is responsible for preparation of the sanctuary for Mass and care for the altar linens, vestments and vessels. It is a Women's ministry comprised of individuals who have shown dedication to God through faithful attendance at Mass. The Altar Guild decorates the church for seasonal celebrations.

Prayers and Squares is an interfaith outreach organization that combines the gift of prayer with the gift of a hand-tied quilt. The purpose is to promote prayer through the use of the quilts. Many hands are involved in making each quilt. The fabric is cut into blocks, sewn together and prepared for finishing. The blocks are sewn together to make the top, then 'sandwiched' together and the quilting, binding, tying, and labeling is completed. A heavy thread is used to take stitches through the quilt layers and the ends are left free to be tied with a square knot. As each knot is tied, a silent prayer is said for someone in special need, who then receives the finished quilt. 

The meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday evening of the month at 6:30 and the following Friday morning at 9:30. Everyone is welcome to come. No sewing or quilting skills are required. It takes approximately 12-15 hours to create one quilt and each one is done by the ministry members. Donations of fabric and sewing supplies or monetary donations are needed and accepted.

The focus of this group is centered on fellowship, activities and outreach. We do not meet regularly, but do gather for fun activities several times during the year. We have a Christmas Outreach project each year that furnishes gifts for families with children. We have fund raising activities that provide money and gift cards for groceries and gasoline for these families. All women are invited and encouraged to participate in the Women of St. Matthias'.
